Every year at the Royal Ascot race (one of the world’s most famous races) they have a bizarre international exhibition of “fine” ladies’ hats. In each of the five-day racing week, the women are supposed to wear a new hat, and the most extravagant of them – on Thursday, the so-called Ladies’ Day which is the most popular day at the races. Hats are required for all attendees of the race, and for many they are no less entertaining than the race itself– so I’m told.
